Get the inside scoop on this beautiful custom kitchen from designer, Kate Davidson of Kate Davidson Design Inc. We interviewed Kate to find out just what went into this beautiful space.
BDMS: What were your clients’ needs for this space?
The client wanted their dream custom kitchen while still being efficient and having unique features. We achieved this with the large island, luxury appliances and a thoughtful layout.
BDMS: Were there any challenges to designing this space?
Fortunately this kitchen renovation was part of a large scale home remodel. We were able to position the windows exactly where we wanted on either side of the range and since the floors and walls were stripped to the studs we could position the plumbing and electrical as per spec without having to salvage existing lines.
BDMS: Do you have any special considerations or requirements when creating a custom kitchen?
Although it is a larger kitchen we had to carefully use every inch of space to its best potential.
BDMS: How does the flooring play into your design?
The flooring is a prominent feature of the home, we selected a wide plank Sapele wood in a Rubio finish. The floor makes a statement and sets the tone for the entire home.
BDMS: What makes this room functional?
We took great care in designing the cabinetry to suit the homeowners needs. Every drawer and cabinet was customized with a purpose and positioned to create the best flow for the space. We kept the kitchen airy by using the island for the bulk of the storage. Daily glasses and plates are kept in drawers in the island. A second Kohler sink was added to the island and works as a perfect prep sink. I often like to create a feature "heavy duty" wall like we have in this kitchen. The built in fridge, wall ovens, and pantry all kept together opens up the rest of the kitchen and is functional by keeping the key items in this zone.
BDMS: Why did you choose these colors?
We wanted the home to flow and exude the rich tones of the exotic sapele wood, walnut, granite & marble. I focused on a timeless palate that brings a warm richness to the space and brings the outdoors in for this home amonst the trees.
BDMS: What is your favorite aspect of this room?
I would say there are two key features of this kitchen. The large functional island with the dramatic leathered granite top makes for an incredible place for entertaining and cooking. Secondly the Statuorio marble slab on the wall cut out around the windows adds dynamic movement and brightens the space against the wood tones.
